Being a Light in the Workplace ~

We work because we need a purpose and an income, however, working is rarely a solo act. Most likely, you will be working with others to accomplish a common goal each day, but working with others will not always be easy.

Perhaps you feel you just don’t fit in; maybe coworkers dislike you for no apparent reason, or they are rude to your face. In Jesus’ ministry He was bombarded with mockery, slander, and insults for who He was and how He did things. Yet, Jesus demonstrated wisdom and self-control to know when to speak, when not to, and how to respond. You may think your coworkers do not deserve civility or kindness, but we are called to be different and must respond like Christ because God’s standards are higher.

Or, maybe the opposite is true for you; they like you so much they share gossip and have no filter when conversing with you; they even invite you to go out with them (but perhaps to places that make you uneasy). Be sure to share your faith, and don’t shy from conveying your convictions. Don’t grow numb to or excuse sinful behavior. If you have compromised by engaging in ungodly speech or actions for the sake of being accepted, repent to God and even acknowledge your sin to those coworkers. It isn’t easy, and they may not like you anymore, but Christ also was rejected.

Whether your coworkers like you or not you are called to be a light. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” All we do ought to be for Christ. Matthew 10:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

No matter the circumstance, I pray you take opportunities presented to you to be a light and show God’s love to the lost. May we recognize the mission field around us and live wisely and honorably like our Lord!

God bless you! <3
