“Serve the Lord with gladness” Psalm 100:2a

When you hear “serve the Lord” do activities like volunteering in children’s ministry, helping yearly for VBS or Christmas choir, serving at a food bank or shelter come to mind? Or maybe you think of outreaches and missionary work that take you to across the globe. Whether you serve in your church, your community, or the world doing so with the right heart brings glory to God.

I am reminded of Jesus, the Son of God, who continued to teach, heal, and feed the masses though weary and tired. The Savior of the world who washed His disciples’ feet before Passover. The Christ who prayed for strength so He could endure the death He would soon suffer on our account. He was the ultimate servant who said in Mark 10:45a, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…”

What does it look like for a Christian to serve the Lord? Is it a weekly or monthly commitment? Or is it something more? As Christians we must serve the Lord and others daily, like Jesus did. Being a servant is not just a position or title, it is a heart condition.

So, what does it look like to serve daily? Though it can seem daunting to know where to start, here are two ways you can begin.

WORDS: Are you mentoring someone, a peer, co-worker, or family member? Do you encourage people with devotionals or Bible passages? Do you pray for others no matter where you are or who’s around? Do you check up on family and friends to say you care and are praying for them? When someone is hurting do you speak words of love and affirmation?

ACTIONS: Do you do what needs to be done without being asked, both inside and outside the home? Do you recognize when others need help and willingly offer a hand? Do you take time to demonstrate compassion by listening to others?

Words and actions can be powerful acts of service when we use them to pour into others. To serve is a choice; it is a lifestyle. Service should be done with humility and appreciation for who God is and all He has done. When we serve, we reflect Christ who was the servant of all.

God bless you! <3
